Ancient Cave Discovery Unlocks Secrets of Superbugs

Deep inside a cave in New Mexico, researchers have made a startling discovery – bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, yet have been pristinely isolated from human contact for more than four million years.

“Our study shows that antibiotic resistance is hard-wired into bacteria. It could be billions of years old, but we have only been trying to understand it for the last 70 years.”

100,000-Year-Old Art Studio Found in South African Cave

Researchers in South Africa have discovered what may have been the world’s earliest artist’s studio.

A 100,000-year-old workshop used to mix and store the reddish pigment ochre has been discovered in Blombos Cave on the rugged southern coast near Cape Town. At the same site, scientists have found some of the earliest sharp stone tools, as well as evidence of fishing.

The latest find is reported in Friday’s edition of the journal Science. It includes pieces of ochre, grinding bowls, shells for storage and bone and charcoal to mix with the pigment.

Egyptian pharaohs believed that mushrooms had magical powers, and this may be true. Consuming mushrooms with psilocybin will give a person a mystical experience. Other mushrooms can annoy a digestive tract, cause severe physical distress, or even kill a person. Truffle mushrooms are one of the most expensive food items available. Another mushroom, the honey mushroom, is the largest known living organism on earth. Unfortunately, mushrooms have the reputation as something that grows in the dark and on animal dung. Whatever you think of mushrooms, they are really a fascinating group.
