Mass Cannibalism, Slaughter, or Both?
Was it mass cannibalism, ritual slaughter or both? Archaeologists who unearthed the remains of 500 Stone Age corpses in the German town of Herxheim say the meat was cut off their bones as if they were livestock. One conclusion is that the people were eaten — after volunteering to be sacrificed.
Ancient Pagan Vessels Found in Israel
A rare stash of more than 100 pagan worship vessels, all of them intact and dating back more than 3,500 years, have been found in northern Israel, archaeologists said on Monday.
The items were discovered inside a natural hollow in the bedrock which was uncovered during excavations near Tel Qashish, close to the northern port city of Haifa.
Among the items recovered were goblets and bowls, a vessel used for burning incense, and a cup featuring the moulded face of a woman, which would have been used for dedicating a ritual drink offering — or libation — to a god.
Ancient Roman Gladiator Cemetery Discovered
Archaeologists have ultimately come to a conclusion and on Sunday announced that the 80 skeletons that they have dug out from under the city of York, northern England since 2003 were the remains of gladiators and the place is believed to be the ‘unique’ cemetery of the ancient gladiators around 1,800 years ago.
Ancient Meteorite Cult of Estonia
Somewhere between 7,500-4,000 years ago, a meteorite fragmented over Estonia’s Saaremaa island. The meteorite hit with a force comparable to Hiroshima and left nine impact craters, including the 110-meter Kaali crater. Locals worshiped this hole as holy.
