Scientists have shown how the insects will use the Milky Way to orientate themselves as they roll their balls of muck along the ground.

The Post-Apocalyptic Weapons of Lucien Shapiro

electrum-clavam-690x1035

Lucien Shapiro‘s sculptures are a bit frightening.  These baseball bats-turned-weapons seem to be pulled out of a post-apocalyptic neo-dark ages.  In fact, these sculptures are part of the larger Urban Obsessions series.  Like the title implies, the weapons suggest a sort of violent desperation, an urban restlessness taken to its hyperbolic end.  Also, the sculptures of Urban Obsessions are nearly ritualistic like implements of a a post-modern tribal religion. –BEAUTIFUL DECAY

Lonely Astronauts

adrift

Artist Jeremy Geddes paints with considerable skill.  His highly detailed oil paintings depict surreal, often lonely scenes.  Many of his panels picture a lone astronaut in an empty urban landscape.  Its unclear whether his subjects are falling or floating, in trouble or asleep.  Geddes communicates the haunting silence of each scene as effectively as textures and light. He clearly has an ease of technique and personal aesthetic. –BEAUTIFUL DECAY

Frost Flowers: Nature’s Exquisite Ice Extrusion

frost flower 3

It is as beautiful as it is rare.  A frost flower is created on autumn or early winter mornings when ice in extremely thin layers is pushed out from the stems of plants or occasionally wood. This extrusion creates wonderful patterns which curl and fold into gorgeous frozen petioles giving this phenomenon both its name and its appearance.
